University students shocked by misreporting of media outlets

University students shocked by misreporting of media outlets

In light of the recent Boston Marathon bombings, university students are speculative of the news coverage.

Two bombs exploded at the end of the Boston Marathon April 15. The bombs set off by brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev killed three people and injured 183.

As the events unfolded, broadcast networks attempted to relay live updates to viewers. As the events unfolded, people like Heather Rhodes of the University of North Alabama remained glued to the television screens.

“I was addicted to it,” Rhodes said. “I couldn’t stop watching all day even though there were little updates.”

Monday and Tuesday’s initial reports were skewed by facts and fiction. Reports surfaced that additional bombs were in the area with explanations of a dozen people killed and announcements of arrests being made by the end of the day Monday evening. News stations quickly backtracked and corrected their errors by April 16.

In light of recent arrests and rape allegations in the Florence and surrounding areas, University of North Alabama faculty and staff are stepping up to protect their students.

The organization NOW, or Not on Our Watch, was started by UNA faculty and staff to raise awareness about student safety. UNA’s Office of Student Affairs and Police Department also helped to initiate the program.

“Safety is not just a Students Affairs issue, it is an academic issue,” history professor and co-founder of NOW Jeffrey Bibbee said. “Students need to feel safe and supported for productive learning to take place.”

The University of North Alabama Student Government Association will host its third annual Sunset Fountain 5k April 13. All proceeds to the event will go toward the SGA endowed scholarship fund for UNA students.

“This event is not just to promote SGA,” current SGA treasurer Laura Giles said. “By supporting this event, you can help us help students faster than if we had no support and no funds to get to our goal.”

According to Giles, SGA hosted their first SGA 5k in 2011 to help alleviate financial burdens on students through an endowed scholarship fund. Any student at the university is eligible for the scholarship and SGA plans to present five $500 scholarships throughout the school year to students.
