Emergency medical cat care at your fingertips

Emergency medical cat care at your fingertips

We've all been there: It's midnight, and your cat is acting strange. Then it vomits. You watch your pet, wondering if you need to bundle it into the carrier and incur a $100 emergency vet bill to be told your cat is probably fine, or that you should wait until the morning and take your chances on not giving your pet immediate attention.

Pet Safety for the 4th of July

Pet Safety for the 4th of July

The Fourth of July is meant to be a celebration, but with all the festivities, it's important to be prepared and take safety precautions for yourself, but also for your four-legged friends.

Here are some safety tips from the doctors and staff at BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

BluePearl vets say prevention is always the best form of first aid. But if something does happen and your pet is burned or injured, here are some first aid tips you need to know:

• First, never put any types of cream, ointment, butter or margarine on your pet’s burn. These can introduce bacteria and other harmful substances into the burned area.

• If the burn is mild, cool the area as soon as possible with cool water and contact your veterinarian. Never use ice as ice increases the chance of hypothermia.

Stolen dogs from Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter returned

Stolen dogs from Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter returned

Two dogs were stolen from Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter on Wednesday, but they were returned on Thursday.

Someone came into the shelter stating they were interested in Hans and Sans. They took them for a walk but never returned.

A volunteer at the shelter feared the dogs would be turned into bait dogs, used to making fighting dogs aggressive. Bait dogs typically end up dead or maimed.

The shelter contacted WAFF 48 News for coverage.

According to the shelter volunteer, a viewer reported having seen the dogs, and the dogs were returned before the end of the day Thursday. The people who had the dogs were worried they would be arrested and took the dogs back to the shelter.

Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter says they plan to change their policies on the way things are done going forward.
