UNA Student Journalists Alex Lindley and Matt Wilson Win First Place National Award

UNA Student Journalists Alex Lindley and Matt Wilson Win First Place National Award

FLORENCE, AL - Alex Lindley and Matt Wilson of the University of North Alabama won the top news reporting awards on a national level for a series of stories they wrote.

Lindley and Wilson wrote the stories to follow an alleged rape reported on the UNA campus last semester. The series won the first place award in the Region 3 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) competition before advancing on to the national level. Lindley and Wilson were responsible for all interviews and research done prior to writing the stories.

Lindley attributed his success to the collective efforts of The Flor-Ala staff. “We worked really well together all year, so when something big happened, we were able to get the news out quickly in a responsible, informative way,” Lindley said. Lindley said he sees the awards received as confirmation that The Flor-Ala is the best source for UNA news.

YouTubery: 'The Front Line' (of the grocery store)

Supermarket cashier is not traditionally considered a career path by modern standards. It's a good first job for those just starting out, certainly great summer work for high schoolers, but not something you think of as a stopping point on the path to making an independent living.

Not such the case fifty years ago, when this training film, "Supermarket Cashiers: Ambassadors of Goodwill" was produced. A lot more went into the job, as you'll see. Barcodes had yet to become standard, so all goods' prices had to be manually punched in, along with the proper department each item came from. Errors were easier to make and were more costly. Coupons, checkwriting, price discrepancies -- all the things that take seconds to solve these days could take ages in some situations way back when.

#Social101: The miracle of the modified tweet

#Social101: The miracle of the modified tweet

I've been on Twitter now for about three years, and even now I come across little tidbits, tips and tricks about the microblogging site that surprise me or astonish me when I learn they've been around forever.

One such item is the 'modified tweet,' or MT. Many of us, myself included, have glossed over an MT notice in a tweet and just assumed it was a mistype. Actually, this is a very useful tool when you want to retweet someone but have to make a major edit to an original tweet and wish to retain credit.

Here are the basics: Nowadays if you want to retweet someone you have a very helpful button underneath the tweet in question, and in other people's timelines you will see a green tab in the corner of the tweet with your screen name beside it, then the original tweet verbatim below it.

Stream it: 'Sports Night'

Stream it: 'Sports Night'

"Sports Night" is the show that got me interested in working at a TV station. I can guarantee you that I was the only eighth-grader in my little Texas middle school that was tuning into this show as religiously as I was. Come to think of it, I was probably the only person in the area watching it; "Sports Night" lasted two seasons before being unceremoniously canceled in 2000.

This is a shame because the concept had legs. Set behind the scenes of a nightly sports news show, "Sports Night" was the television debut for creator and head writer Aaron Sorkin, who would set up similar fly-on-the-wall shows "West Wing," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," and "The Newsroom."
