Police: Would-be thief misspells grandmother's name on stolen check | News

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- A Shoals man accused of trying to forge a check from his grandmother is being held in the Lauderdale County Jail, after police say his criminal plot failed miserably.

Florence investigators said 19-year-old Jerry Benjamin Crowden stole a check from his grandmother recently, and tried to pass it off at a bank on New Year's Day. However, the teller noticed one glaring problem with it - the grandmother's name was spelled wrong in the signature line.

Even if Crowden was unsure how to spell the woman's name, police said all he had to do was look at the top half of the slip, where the name printed correctly. The teller took the $80 check, and called Crowden's grandmother, who said it was indeed stolen.

Crowden left the bank, but was arrested a couple of days later, and charged with possession of a forged instrument.
