A 35-year-old man is in jail after was accused of assaulting and abusing a 6-month-old baby.

Kristopher Dale Phillips, 54, Woodland Hills Drive, Florence, is charged with first-degree assault and child abuse, Florence police detective Sgt. Cliff Billingsley said this morning.

He said Phillips was arrested at his residence Monday evening after warrants were issued.

Florence teens charged with dozens crimes

Florence, AL (WAFF) - Police in Florence say two boys are responsible for a string of vandalism cases across the city.

Police tell us the two shot marbles with slingshots, causing $16,000 worth of damage to homes, vehicles and churches. The two were released to their parent's custody.

The unidentified 16 and 17 year olds were arrested and charged this week with a laundry list of crimes :

24 felony counts of shooting into unoccupied vehicles

7 counts shooting into occupied dwelling

3 counts shooting into unoccupied dwelling (2 of which are churches)

23 counts misdemeanor of criminal mischief 3rd

10 counts criminal mischief 2nd

Investigators say the two were responsible for a total of 35 separate incidents in neighborhoods across town.

A local man is in jail after police said he stole more than $2,000 in property from a local homeowner.

Andrew Louis Calhoun, 28, Lawrenceburg, Tenn., is charged with aggravated burglary, theft of property and vandalism, Lawrenceburg Police Chief Judy Moore said today.

Florence Police Dept. looking for new officers

Florence, AL (WAFF) - The Florence Police Department is looking to fill it's ranks, and they're reaching out through social media.

The department posted a job description on their Facebook page Wednesday morning, saying applications were available at the city's Office of Human Resources at 110 West College Street for the next 30 days.

The posting includes the physical demands of the job, the annual pay and hiring process.

University students shocked by misreporting of media outlets

In light of the recent Boston Marathon bombings, university students are speculative of the news coverage.

Two bombs exploded at the end of the Boston Marathon April 15. The bombs set off by brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev killed three people and injured 183.

As the events unfolded, broadcast networks attempted to relay live updates to viewers. As the events unfolded, people like Heather Rhodes of the University of North Alabama remained glued to the television screens.

“I was addicted to it,” Rhodes said. “I couldn’t stop watching all day even though there were little updates.”

 Monday and Tuesday’s initial reports were skewed by facts and fiction. Reports surfaced that additional bombs were in the area with explanations of a dozen people killed and announcements of arrests being made by the end of the day Monday evening. News stations quickly backtracked and corrected their errors by April 16.

Man indicted in pharmacy robbery case

A man accused of robbing a pharmacy at gunpoint was indicted Friday.

John Steven Balentine, 30 of Florence, was indicted for first-degree robbery and trafficking illegal drugs.

Balentine was arrested on November 27 after authorities said he walked into Tim’s Discount Pharmacy on Helton Drive with a gun and demanded prescription narcotics.

Balentine will be arraigned in May.

Two men sought after tractor theft caught on tape

Florence, AL (WAFF) - Florence Police are looking for two men who broke into a tractor supply store early Friday morning, and drove off with a new tractor for themselves.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. at the EA Nelson shop on Mitchell Boulevard.

Investigators tell us two men cut through the fence, went back and opened the gate, brought their truck in, loaded a tractor on it, then took off.

If the truck of men in these pictures look familiar, call Florence Police.
