Shoals hosts annual AHSAA training conference for umpires

Through Sunday, the AHSAA will spend time with umpires from across Alabama.

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- This weekend more than 70 umpires are in the Shoals for the annual Alabama High School Athletic Association's training conference.

There's a lot riding on the officials at a high school baseball game, which is why they spend countless hours both on the field and in the classroom brushing up on their skills.

Through Sunday, the AHSAA will spend time with umpires from across Alabama.

They have also lined up high school teams looking to get a little extra practice in to scrimmage against each other to give umps hands on experience.

Instructors said there is a lot of pressure on officials at the high school level because a wrong call could cost players scholarships and coaches their jobs.

Judge rules on new Shoals hospital

Source: MGN Online

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- A judge ruled on a key
proposal for a new hospital in the Shoals Friday morning.

Regional Care Hospital Partners wanted to build a 300-bed hospital in east Florence. The new facility would
replace ECM Hospital which is on the other side of town.

Officials at Helen Keller Hospital and other Huntsville Hospital affiliates are against the idea, saying that the new hospital
is too big and fear it will be detrimental to their facilities.

A judge is recommending a new hospital be built but with fewer beds. The judge also said no to
a proposed cancer facility.

If you know the name of filmmaker Ken Burns, you are likely familiar with his epic-length documentaries on public television, such as the eleven-hour long series The Civil War and the ten "inning" Baseball.

If the length of devotion required to watching these films is beyond your schedule, I completely understand. (Find some time eventually, though--they are both well worth the time!) Luckily, there are smaller sized films by Burns that are just as worthy of your attention.

Empire of the Air is a 90-minute long entry in the Ken Burns' America series released by PBS Home Video that focuses on the turbulent times between three men, each eager to be the king of an important new medium -- radio.

Lauderdale Co. couple charged with animal cruelty

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A Lauderdale County couple faces 14 counts of animal cruelty after community tips led authorities to their home.

It took officials more than three days to capture all the dogs from the residence on County Road 182. Those dogs are being treated for severe mange and worms.

After receiving complaints for people in the community, deputies and volunteers say what they found was devastating.

"We found skeletons - puppy skeletons adult dog skeletons, so these dogs have been there their entire lives. The ones that weren't strong enough to survive just died there," said Debbie Rapphun with the Florence-Lauderdale Animal Shelter.

Officials said 14 dogs were taken from the home. No one lives at the property, so the dogs were left to fend for themselves with an occasional drop of food.
