A 35-year-old man is in jail after was accused of assaulting and abusing a 6-month-old baby.

Kristopher Dale Phillips, 54, Woodland Hills Drive, Florence, is charged with first-degree assault and child abuse, Florence police detective Sgt. Cliff Billingsley said this morning.

He said Phillips was arrested at his residence Monday evening after warrants were issued.

Thieves steal electronics, damage Shoals church

Deputies said someone threw a rock through the back door and forced their way into the church.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Thieves targeted electronics over the weekend at the Atlas Church of Christ in Lauderdale County.

Now deputies are searching for those responsible.

Deputies said someone threw a rock through the back door and forced their way into the church.

Several electronics, including iPads, computers, and a PA system were taken.

Investigators said more than $3,000 worth of damage and property were taken from the church.

1 person killed in Lauderdale Co. wreck

Investigators said David Morris died in the crash.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- One person died in a wreck in Lauderdale County Monday around 7 a.m. on County Road 5 near Waterloo Road.

Investigators said David Morris died in the crash.

He worked for the county in the solid waste department.

Morris was on his way to work when the wreck happened.

UNA breaks ground on new science building

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- Despite bad weather, UNA officials broke ground on a new science and technology building Monday.

The ceremony kicked off with UNA President William Cale and other school leaders.
The building will be located between Kilby Laboratory School and Flowers Hall.
Officials will later meet to preview what will go on in the new building and to look at the education advancements it will provide for the school.

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- A man from Lauderdale County is facing several serious charges including domestic violence, assault, burglary and attempted rape.

State emphasizes motorcycle safety

Promoting safe driving habits by motorists and motorcyclists is a key element of the state's promotion of National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

The Alabama Department of Transportation along with other state agencies, motorcycle clubs, businesses, safety groups and state and local law enforcement are reminding drivers and riders that motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility.

Transportation Director John Cooper stresses motorcycle riders and motorists must share the road to remain safe.

"As a matter of safety, it is necessary for motorcycle riders and drivers of other types of vehicles to use safe driving habits," Cooper said. "To prevent injuries and deaths on Alabama's roadways, motorcyclists and motorists must be vigilant in their efforts to share the road and ensure everyone's safety."... Read More
