Shoals veterans seek volunteers to drive van

Volunteering is easy. Call the Shoals chapter at 256-381-8229. Any and all volunteers are welcome.

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF)- Every week, a group in the Shoals helps disabled veterans get to the doctor. The group is now asking for help to keep their program on track.

Three years ago, the Shoals chapter of the Disabled American Veterans raised money to purchase a van to help fellow veterans get the medical care they need.

Nearly 36 months and 185,000 miles later, this group has helped more than 2,000 disabled veterans receive care at Birmingham's Veterans Hospital.

Vietnam veterans Dan Pounders and Mark Moore organize the shuttles.

They said they are running short on drivers and need the community's help make these trips possible.

They are asking for a little assistance to help enrich the lives of those who once fought for our country.

Shoals man allegedly abused 6-month-old

Phillips claims the toddler sat on the baby's head, but according to doctors, police say his story doesn't add up.

COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A Shoals man is in jail, accused of abusing a 6-month-old child. The infant had to be treated for a fractured skull.

Investigators say the attack happened when 35-year-old Kristopher Phillips was staying at his girlfriend's house with the baby and another child.

Phillips claims the toddler sat on the baby's head, but according to doctors, police say his story doesn't add up.

The child is being treated at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Investigators said the baby is not only suffering from fractures to each side of his head, but he also has a broken arm.

Police believe all the injuries stem from Phillips' assault earlier this month.

Doctors tell police the baby is having seizures and has retinal hemorrhaging stemming from fractures to the baby's skull.

They say it's unclear at this time if the child will have any permanent damage.
